ABOUT JANE

Brigante Textile Arts is the creative outlet of Jane Barnett BA (Hons).

After graduating with a degree in Fine Art and Anthropology from Oxford Brookes in 1991, Jane did a variety of art related jobs, including serving as Art Education Officer for Calderdale Museums and Galleries for several years. Alongside this, she continued to sell her own art, and work on projects for Oxford and Leeds City Councils, amongst others. She moved to Wales and then Brittany, where she started concentrating on mainly textile based art, which was a natural progression after teaching felt making for over twenty years. She sold her work in various galleries throughout Brittany and also worked on commissions.

Jane returned to the UK in 2020, and is currently creating textile sculptures and embroidered pieces based on folklore, myth, magic and nature.

The name Brigante comes from the Brigante Celtic tribe, which occupied West Yorkshire in ancient times, and were named after the goddess Brigantia. Little evidence has been found pertaining to her, but a stone carved depiction was discovered in Brittany and an inscription found in Greetland, where Jane now lives. She is thought to be the goddess of rivers and sacred waters, and also of crafts.
